Welcome to my first blog post. I'd like to use this space to connect with you. Think of this as an ongoing conversation between you and me where we can share experiences and interests as we move towards a common goal of giving our children the many gifts sport has to offer.
Creating Environments
Growing up in a vibrant sports culture isn't what was given to me by my parents but more created around me as I could easily pick and choose from any sport under the sunny skies of South Africa. Schools are packed with sports schedules throughout the year, and the advantages and opportunities to thrive and develop are endless. This you don't actually know as a child growing up, but as many of my friends would agree, we've all reaped so many gifted benefits from all those fantastic years growing up in an active sporting environment.
Being a father myself and having had the opportunity to mentor and nurture many talented children in a sporting environment over the past decade, you learn and appreciate so much. Children show you new and imaginative ways to complete exercises, overcome fears, and along the way, discover new hidden talents. 'The most exciting part, I must add.'
"Our digital world will forever evolve, but one thing will always remain Sport." Wesley Barresi
I can only look back at my youthful years and use that as an example to explain to you what sport can do in so many ways. It is only now that I have retired as a professional sportsman that I truly comprehend the impact it has had on my life. Yes, you may ask yourself, but you are a natural or gifted? Yes, i was, but I would have never known about these talents if that environment wasn't created around me. Due to my development through exploring other sports and activities, I participated in so many more sports. I enjoyed them much more easily, even if I wasn't that good at them. Yes, I wasn't good at every sport I tried, and it frustrated me, but again I had fun doing them for many years.
Gen-C-Sports
This is exactly where my business idea and passion for sports changed from a one-person sport (cricket coach) to being a mentor, a nurturer in children's development first and foremost, and then, sports introduction. It was the "naturally" talented children and "under-developed" children, more importantly over the last few years, that have guided me straight to this idea of Gen-C-Sports. Capable or not, children need to be nurtured, trained, mentored, and challenged. Sports will give our children so much more than we can ever imagine, but we as parents, teachers, and leaders need to create these environments. These environments begin with development. It breaks down barriers and builds confidence and self-belief, and once your child is introduced to sport, that is where the real magic for your child begins.
